How It Works
ASIC design: transistor layouts are optimized specifically for the target algorithm (SHA-256 for Bitcoin). Every gate, pipeline stage, and memory access is tuned for this one workload. The result: 100,000x+ better performance-per-watt compared to a CPU running the same algorithm. Lifecycle: new ASIC generations launch every 12-18 months with incremental efficiency improvements (measured in Joules per Terahash, J/TH). Current best: ~15-17 J/TH (Antminer S21, WhatsMiner M60). Each generation makes older units less competitive (they still work but earn less per kWh consumed). ASIC-resistant coins are more decentralized
Some coins (Monero with RandomX) use ASIC-resistant algorithms to stay GPU/CPU-mineable. This keeps mining accessible to individuals but does not guarantee decentralization: botnets (hijacked computers) and GPU farms can still concentrate hash power. ASIC resistance is a design philosophy, not a decentralization guarantee.
ASICs can be repurposed if mining becomes unprofitable
Bitcoin ASICs have zero alternative use. They cannot browse the web, run AI, or mine other coins. If mining becomes unprofitable, they are electronic waste. This is unlike GPUs which retain resale value for gaming, AI training, and other workloads.
